The acclaimed graphic novel from crime writer Max_Allan_Collins becomes this big budget Dreamworks drama from director Sam_Mendes and screenwriter David_Self. Tom_Hanks stars as Michael Sullivan, a morally conflicted Depression-era hit man committing murder in the name of his employer, John Rooney (Paul_Newman). A kindly, aging Irish crime boss who raised Sullivan as his surrogate son, Rooney is affiliated with Al Capone in Chicago and thus wields great power in the “Tri-Cities” of Moline, IL; Rock Island, IL; and Davenport, IA. Curious about his father’s mysterious profession, Sullivan’s son, Michael Jr. (Tyler_Hoechlin), stows away in his father’s automobile one night and witnesses the execution of a man at the hands of Sullivan and Rooney’s biological son, Connor (Daniel_Craig). Although Michael keeps his promise to remain silent about what he’s seen, the paranoid and unstable Connor tries to wipe out the entire Sullivan clan anyway, succeeding only in killing Sullivan’s wife, Annie (Jennifer_Jason_Leigh), and youngest son, Peter (Liam_Aiken). Enraged at this and another surprise betrayal by the Rooneys, Sullivan embarks on a path of bloody retribution, Michael in tow. Although he intends to leave his boy with relatives in the rural town of Perdition once the coast is clear, he ends up exposing Michael to the goriest aspects of his talents, slaughtering former associates as he dodges contract assassin Maguire (Jude_Law) and cripples the cash flow of the Rooney and Capone organizations through a series of bank robberies, attempting to force either mob family to offer up the sequestered Connor as a sacrifice. Inspired by the popular Japanese comic book series -Lone Wolf and Cub and based loosely on an episode from the life and career of notorious real-life crime figures John and Connor Looney, Road to Perdition co-stars Stanley_Tucci as legendary Chicago mobster Frank Nitti.

One of the only survivors of a man-made plague joins forces with a team of private warriors in a bid to save what’s left of the Earth in this sequel to Resident_Evil, the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game. Picking up where the first film left off, Resident Evil: Apocalypse finds Alice (Milla_Jovovich) still battling the living dead who are overtaking Raccoon City, inoculated with an anti-virus by the nefarious and all-powerful Umbrella Corporation (in addition to the virus itself). Alice encounters Jill Valentine (Sienna_Guillory), a former member of Umbrella’s internal defense team. Forming an alliance with mercenary-for-hire Carlos Olivera (Oded_Fehr) and his cohorts, this tiny band of survivors seeks out Dr. Charles Ashford (Jared_Harris), Umbrella’s top scientist and one of the only men with the know-how to find a solution to the zombie menace; however, they discover that Ashford’s cooperation comes with a price — the scientist’s daughter Angie (Sophie_Vavasseur) is missing, and he’ll help Alice and her partners only if Angie is returned to him safe and sound. Resident Evil: Apocalypse was the first solo directorial credit for Alexander_Witt, who previously distinguished himself as a cinematographer and second-unit director.

Director Brian_De_Palma turns his lens on the Iraq War with this “fictional documentary” about the experience of U.S. soldiers involved in the conflict. Based on a news item about the rape of an Iraqi schoolgirl by wayward grunts assigned to patrol a checkpoint, the film depicts a scenario not unlike the one De_Palma covered in Casualties of War. Shot on high-definition video, Redacted also addresses the ever-evolving manner in which war is covered by the media by focusing on such journalistic innovations as blog coverage and web reporting.

Following the phenomenal success of The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, Anthony_Hopkins returns as brilliant madman Hannibal Lecter in this thriller based on the novel in which author Thomas_Harris introduced the character. Will Graham (Edward_Norton) is an FBI agent with a rare gift for tracking serial killers who brought Hannibal Lecter to justice; however, his confrontation with Lecter proved to be a bloody, near-death experience, and afterward Graham retired from the Bureau, moving to Florida to spend his time with his wife, Molly (Mary-Louise Parker), and their son. However, a particularly grisly killer is on the loose, and Jack Crawford (Harvey_Keitel), Graham’s one-time mentor at the Bureau, asks him to return to duty to find him. The “Tooth Fairy” is a vicious murderer who kills entire families at once, covering the eyes of his victims with bits of a shattered mirror. Graham finds he needs help putting together the pieces of the “Tooth Fairy” case, and he calls upon Lecter looking for advice. Lecter, at once vaguely helpful and self-serving, as usual, offers scraps of information to Graham which help him zero in on the killer. But Lecter knows more than he’s telling; the “Tooth Fairy” is actually Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph_Fiennes), a troubled and withdrawn man who admires Lecter’s violent panache and corresponds with him. Dolarhyde works at a film processing lab, where one of his co-workers, a blind woman named Reba McClane (Emily_Watson), seems to be quite attracted to him. As Dolarhyde wrestles with both his murderous impulses and his feelings for McClane, Lecter plays Graham and Dolarhyde against one another so that, as the FBI agent comes closer to catching “the Tooth Fairy,” Dolarhyde moves in on his next victim — Graham’s family. Red Dragon marked the second time Harris’ novel of the same name had been brought to the screen; five years prior to The Silence of the Lambs, Michael_Mann adapted the book for the screen as Manhunter, which starred William_Petersen as Graham and Brian_Cox as Lecter.
